Probiotics Description
What is it?
Cultures of ‘friendly’ bacteria normally found in the intestine. Probiotics such as acidophilus and bifidus are consumed to improve digestion by multiplying and restoring the balance of the normal bacterial population of the intestine.
Traditional use
They have been used to help reduce diarrhoea in IBS. May help to promote the health of the immune system. There is some evidence to show that probiotics could be beneficial in lactose intolerance.
Who could benefit?
Those who have been taking antibiotics which upset the balance of bacteria in the intestine. Those with IBS or abdominal bloating. Those suffering from food poisoning.
How to buy/take
As bio-yoghurts or milk based drinks. Capsules. To be effective, they should be consumed daily. Keep capsules refrigerated.
