Coenzyme Q10 for the Prevention of Migraine Headaches

While the benefits of coenzyme Q10 have been well established for people with heart and serious neurological disorders, researchers are exploring new applications for its use. One of the reasons CoQ10 is so helpful for people with brain diseases such as Huntingdon’s disease and Parkinson’s disease (diseases in which the mitochondria, the powerhouses of the cells, do not work properly) is due to its ability to help fuel the mitochondria and keep them working properly. It has been theorized that abnormal functioning of the mitochondria is a possible cause of migraine headaches.

A recent study published in the journal Cephalalgia examined the use of coenzyme Q10 in chronic migraine sufferers. Thirty-one participants received 150 mg of CoQ10 per day for three months. At the end of the third month, the number of migraine attacks experienced by the participants declined over 50%. Additionally, no side effects of Coenzyme Q10 were reported. The researchers for this study concluded that CoQ10 is an effective treatment for the prevention of migraine headaches.
