Chiropractic activator method
The chiropractic actiator method is a way to get relief from many types of pain in a less scary manner.
"The physicians of the future will prescribe no medicine, but rather, will educate their patients in the maintenance of good health."
-- Thomas Edison
Well, the future seems to be here.
Seems too simple? We see nothing wrong in thinking that our body functions normally when we feel perfectly healthy. Why not consider, then, that when we are not feeling well due to illness, injury or trauma; our body is in a state of malfunction or dysfunction?
Every part of our bodies; bones, muscles, glands, organs and blood vessels are controlled and directed to perform their function by our nervous system. The nervous system consists of the brain, the spinal cord and the nerves that branch through openings between the spinal vertebrae to every part of the body. The spine then is the key to the healthy function of our bodies. So how do you get a healthy spine?
Chiropractic care was born in 1895 when Dr. D.D. Palmer adjusted a misalignment (now known as a subluxation) of the spinal vertebrae in his janitor, and cured the janitor’s deafness. Spinal adjustments in other patients resulted in mind-boggling array of improvements in seemingly unrelated diseases and ailments. Immersing himself in study, Palmer came to the realization that the spine and nervous system controlled the body completely.
Alan Johnson, Doctor of Chiropractic (DC)subscribes to the same theory. “Technically, we don’t ‘cure’ anybody, but we help the body to heal itself.” Using a process one step further evolved than adjustment by hand, Johnson uses the Activator Method of Chiropractic on his patients.
An Activator is a small hand-held instrument that looks and acts similar to a 6- inch pogo stick. A spring inside delivers a high-speed, but gentle, thrust to the vertebrae or joint via a small rubber tip. Using the activator, rather than a manual adjustment, the patient’s muscle resistance is not fighting against the adjustment. In contrast, a typical manual adjustment requires the chiropractor to bend and twist the patient into positions that are not natural to the body, causing the patient to tense up. Patients remain in their own clothing during adjustments, making a visit to the chiropractor relatively quick and uncomplicated.
Besides lower back pain, chiropractors can help with many other aches, pains and ailments. Patients are seen for headaches, shoulder, knee and hip pain, and many job or sports-related injuries. Quite often patients report that they have improvements in conditions that they had never thought to mention to him, such as painful menstrual periods, asthma, and allergies. This makes sense when you realize that virtually every body part is controlled by the central nervous system, and by locating and correcting any nerve interference’s, the body can then be naturally restored to good health and function. It’s a chiropractor's job to find the biomechanical problems and correct them.
There are no “typical” patients. Patients include newborn babies who have had subluxations from the birth process as well as people in their 90’s who are now physically much more active than their peers. An initial examination can sometimes include a thorough medical history, x-rays, and physical examination, for a cost of around $100. As an example, the doctor mentioned earlier, Alan Johnson, charges $25 per visit, $20 for senior citizens, and children under 17 are seen free during any parent visit. Johnson is able to keep office fees affordable by not participating in any managed care plans, however patients are free to file their own claims with their health insurance companies, many of which do cover chiropractic care.
