Advantages of a diet high in Beta carotene
Skin benefits from the nutrition of beta carotene. A diet high in foods containing beta-carotene is one of the strongest natural weapons against disease.
Beta-carotene is the most powerful member of the carotenoid family. These substances form the coloring pigments for deep yellow, orange and dark green fruits and vegetables. When beta-carotene is introduced into the body through food, it converts into vitamin A, for use as needed by the body. In its natural form, it can be found in strawberries, cantaloupe, broccoli, squash, sweet potatoes, carrots, etc. Apart from the advantages of vitamin A conversion, beta-carotene boosts the immune system by absorbing harmful free oxygen molecules (free radicals) in the body. These free radicals are substances which bombard the body with various bacteria and viruses that lead to cancer, heart disease and most of the more serious physical ailments. Beta-carotene also increases the number of natural killer cells produced by the body to consume these harmful substances.
Although beta-carotene supplements are widely available commercially, the preferred form is that found in fresh fruits and vegetables. There have been conflicting reports on the effectiveness of beta-carotene supplements with some research findings that the supplements may even increase the risk for some cancers. Eating five or more servings of fresh produce will yield the recommended amounts of beta-carotene without supplements.
Foods high in this substance are believed to greatly reduce the risk of stroke, heart disease and many yeast infections. It is also said to be effective in treating most diseases of the immune system. For those with lung ailments, beta-carotene acts to maintain and strengthen the mucuous linings of the nose and lungs. Smokers and those who consume excessive amounts of alcohol are urged to consume more foods rich in beta-carotene to get maximum effects since the nutrient is depleted more quickly in these individuals. Smokers are strongly discouraged from using beta-carotene supplements because there is evidence that it may increase cancer risk for those who smoke.
